Aaron Douglas O'Connell is an American Experimental Quantum Physicist. Working under Andrew N. Cleland and John M. Martinis at the University of California in Santa Barbara, he created the world's first quantum machine. In particular, he was able to convert the quantum state of a superconducting quantum bit, a device used in quantum computing, to the motion state of a macroscopic mechanical resonator. His quantum machine measurements form the first direct observations of quantified behavior in the motion of a visible object and have led the journal of Science to honor his work as "Breakthrough of the year "2010.
