Vivien Leigh is an Indian-British actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for her final roles as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind and Blanche DuBois in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire, a role she also performed on stage at London's West End in 1949. She also won the Tony Award for her work in the Broadway musical version of Tovarich. After graduating from drama school, Leigh made minor appearances in four films in 1935 and rose to the female lead in Fire Over England. Praised for her good looks, Leigh believes her physical characteristics sometimes prevent her from being taken seriously as an actress. Although she is known as a film actress, Leigh is above all a stage artist. During her 30-year career, she has played a variety of roles, from comedy heroines Noël Coward and George Bernard Shaw to classic Shakespeare characters like Ophelia, Cleopatra, Juliet and Lady Macbeth.
She became immortalized as Scarlet O'Hara in the 1939 Civil War romance film Gone with the Wind. Her other notable films include Fire Over England, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Tovarich.
